Hello November

Thoughts

National Novel Writing Month is here. Some folks look forward to the holidays or to the gifts that come with those holidays, but the end of the year I look forward to the most is that crazy literary challenge in November.

When I first started taking on the challenge, I would fly by the seat of my pants. A “pantser” as people in the crowd call it. But I do feel like with the practice of trying it out year after year that I’m transitioning to more of a planner.

Even though the challenge focuses on the quantity, not quality, it’s been difficult to get to the end of a story. How do I get my character from A to B when I don’t really know what B is supposed to be? Well, this time around I wrote up A to G to P. Which is way more planning I’ve done ahead of time than in the past. And yet I still find myself in the struggle 😅. Granted other life things have come up in the first few days. So, hopefully, week 2 will even it out.

the data life

Thoughts

Time passes and things change. People do it every day, every minute. So, I can’t expect any less from corporations. The net has brought about so many interesting things and avenues of communication. It felt pretty free and naive at the beginning. A lot of that data was impermanent. Were people’s lives even referred to as data then?

Kind of like cleaning out an old closet is the same thing to apply digitally. Even though space seems almost endless, it still isn’t. It’s immense, but at the same time, who really wants to maintain all that data? If you’ve got accounts out there that you never use anymore, that already means you don’t want to maintain it yourself. I find that I too, no longer use accounts I’ve made over the years. As I learn more info on what is happening to these start ups or other companies, it definitely turns me off using the service.

Livejournal, I’ve deleted. Tumblr, I’m cleaning up also. Facebook is on the list, once I figure out a way to export some contacts. Instagram I’m torn over. It’s owned by FB but people actually still use it. It must absolutely be a tool for corporate, but perhaps if I continue to control what I post, maybe I’ve convinced myself I’m in control. Maybe not. Snapchat seemed to me like an interesting alternative, but even now I can see people use it a lot less. At least it’s still a company on it’s own, but you and I know that it’s probably only going to follow in FB footsteps as it struggles to be a profit making company. Not going to lie, just contemplating how to get out of google’s or amazon’s grasp is a doozy. Yahoo is one of my oldest accounts and I’m pretty annoyed that it’s probably going on my hit list next. Check out “How to opt out of Yahoo Mail’s invasive data scanning” if you still use Yahoo too.

I know some people will say it’s too late, corporate has everything on you. Just remember, yes they have a lot, but they do not have everything. Time passes and things change and the person you were at that time when you made that post 5 years ago, may not be the same person who shops for whatever now. You should be the only one in control of your life, your date. Right?

Photo Albums unite!

Photography

It kind of made my day that SmugMug bought Flickr. I’ve been using Flickr since I bought my first digital camera back in 2004. It’s been the most awesome digital photo album that I just couldn’t find a replacement I liked. I even paid for Pro a couple of times before Yahoo bought it. Whatever Yahoo mismanagement did, the site had been neglected since. I actually started to look for a replacement last year which is how I got a SmugMug account. Finally, a company that is focused on the product. Hopefully that means it’ll bring it back to life. *fingers crossed*

I’ll probably keep both accounts but will find separate uses. I did want to keep family photos private but have another venue for public posts. We’ll see!

Happy New Year 2018

Writing

It’s a new year and every day is a new opportunity to try something new. I was perusing reddit and came across this post. Signing up for the Bradbury Challenge just felt like something different enough to make this year different from the last.

The plan is to write a short story every week for a year. It’s already the end of week 2, and it’s not perfect but I’ve attempted 2 stories now. Haven’t finished one yet, but I think as long as I attempt and start something, it’s better than nothing.

All future stories I’ll be adding here. I’ll probably continue to add more to past stories as I find the time to finish them.

Owl on the wire

Writing

The owl on the wire
Power twitching beneath the grasp of claws
The drone of traffic
grumbling
bumper to bumper
It turns his head
to view the Natural world below
Grey sky above
The gust of wind through a ruffle of feathers

Wynwood Walls

Photography

I took a trip to visit family recently and we checked out a little spot called Wynwood Walls. The neighborhood is pretty quiet with a few hipster spots. It’s pretty awesome to just walk around and stumble upon mural after mural. One thing that made it special is the impermanence of street art. Can’t wait to go back and see what else new has been created.

Washi tape

I knew about washi tape for a little while. I didn’t really get it then. Not until after I really started to get into journalling again that I realized the appeal of using washi tape; a quick way to stick photos and notes or a neat way to divide space on paper.

Mom's Birthday Card

Cards

A little while ago was my mother’s birthday. She’s always been an inspiration for me artistically, so I absolutely had to make something from scratch.

I was at the craft store and came across this item called grunge paper. It’s a fairly thick soft cardboard like material that is almost rubbery. I think there’s a lot more potential with this material than I accomplished this time. I cut out some butterfly wings and used my Shinhan markers to fade colors in.

I didn’t think too far ahead what I was going to do for the butterfly body, so I found some scrap paper that I folded for structure and wrapped the string around it for texture. Glue gun makes everything stick together!

I think it came out prettier than I thought because it was a spur of the moment crafting. At least my mom was happy and that’s what matters. <3

Keeping Organized

Supplies

I went to a gaming convention recently, absolutely not intending to look or get any art supplies. Yet, there was a vendor there that was an art supply store. OMG they were selling Shinhan markers for a great price. I stood staring at the rack for at least half an hour debating what markers I already owned. I knew I had to take the opportunity to purchase some because Shinhan is harder to find in stores in my area.

Because I wasted about an hour of my life debating markers, I decided to catalogue the colors I own just in case I ever happen across another sale. Sometimes, it’s actually useful being organized.
